Can a Piano Still Be Classy When It's Got Squishy Tube Keys?

The piano is a pretty old instrument. And sure we have electric variations, which added the option mess with the sound, but the key interface has remained pretty standard. Roli is trying to shake that up with the Seaboard Grand, a new, futuristic-style instrument that puts pitch tweaking at your fingertips. More »

(AP) ? Overall champion Tina Maze of Slovenia beat Mikaela Shiffrin in a World Cup slalom Sunday to overtake the American teenager in the discipline standings and close in on becoming the first woman to win five crystal globes in a season.

Maze also got a piece of another record in a season where she has already broken several, equaling Austrian great Hermann Maier's mark of 22 World Cup podiums in 1999-2000. The Slovenian earlier broke Maier's record for points in a season, and she extended her total to 2,254 with her 10th win.

Maze finished her two runs on the Ofterschwanger Horn course in 1 minute, 52.85 seconds to beat Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by 0.25 seconds.

More importantly, though, she beat the 17-year-old Shiffrin after trailing the American world champion by one tenth of a second on the first run. Shiffrin couldn't protect her lead and finished 0.75 behind in third place, giving Maze a seven-point lead in the slalom standings going into Saturday's last race of the season.

"There was a bit of nervousness there, because it's a discipline in which you have to attack and risk a little bit," Maze said. "So for me today, it was important just to stay calm and ski ? not to think too much."

With a win worth 100 points and second place getting 80, a win for either Shiffrin or Maze would secure the slalom title and the crystal globe that comes with it.

"It isn't over until the fat lady sings," Shiffrin said. "It's good that it's exciting to the end."

The 29-year-old Maze has already clinched the overall and giant slalom titles. She leads the super-G standings along with the slalom and can also clinch the downhill title at next week's World Cup finals at Lenzerheide, Switzerland.

Shiffrin had been bidding to become only the second woman to win four World Cup slaloms in a season at age 17 or younger; she won't have the chance again as she turns 18 on Wednesday.

German skier Christa Zechmeister achieved the feat in 1973-74 as a 16-year-old.

The race was held up for several minutes after Anne-Sophie Barthet of France crashed near the finish and needed treatment.

The Personal Finance Scam | MetaFilter

I'm absolutely shocked, just shocked I tell you. Olen got her start in the personal finance world when she ran a series for the Los Angeles Times called Money Makeover, which involved helping regular folks connect with financial gurus sort out their personal finances.
?My question was, did we mislead people?? Olen said. ?That was really the genesis of the book.? As she found out, the personal finance industry is a swamp of conflicts of interest, shoddy advice, and prognosticators who profit off of the economic anxiety of everyday Americans.
?These empires of personal finance sort of start up, in part, as a way to explain it all to us,? she said, and they proliferate during hard economic times:

"People are desperate, and we live in this society where there?s deep shame around money, and there?s this idea that everybody should be able to make it?And so we feel very bereft and alone. Until very recently ? like the past year recently ? I would argue the average person really had no idea that they weren?t alone in this. The number in our 401(k)?s is roughly $25,000. That?s not enough money to get you through more than a year or two, nevermind a 30 year retirement. But everybody thought this was their individual failure. It didn?t occur to anybody that this was the average number and everybody was in on this. We?re all bereft here.

And the personal finance industry really preys on this idea that you can do it alone. And that you are alone in this. And that to not be able to do it is a personal failure. For instance, to give one very specific example, Dave Ramsey, who?s the big radio guru, has explicitly denied income inequality exists. And has told people they can choose not to participate in a recession."

Zen & the Art of Relationship Maintenance | World of Psychology

Zen and the Art of Relationship MaintenanceMost people have an appreciation for and an acceptance of that fact that a relationship doesn?t run smoothly on its own. It takes work, but how many people actually do any work? The answer is very few.

I find that people are coming to me with relationship issues over and over again. When I ask for some history or background, I inevitably see that there is no ?relationship maintenance? being done by either partner.

?Relationship maintenance? can be equated to a beautifully kept garden. It didn?t just grow wild and appear beautiful overnight.

It?s more than likely that there were some foundations put in place ? for example, a strong surface to hold the garden seat in the peaceful sitting area. Some other areas where beautiful plants are blooming need less preparation. Places where where more wild or natural plants are living freely don?t require as much effort from you. In some parts of the garden there may be a special feature, maybe a water feature or sculpture.

These elements all go into making a garden complete. On their own they don?t look like much, but together they give the garden form, design and a life that can be interesting through all seasons, even when it?s cold.

All this takes time and effort, work and thought. It doesn?t just happen, even if money is thrown at it. It takes time for plants to bed in and settle, to see if they like their new environment.

Relationships are very much like gardens. They need time to settle. They need creativity. They need interest that will see both people through over the long term, not just in the good times.

There are times when your relationship can be left to its own devices, as the wild part of a garden is, but your relationship needs to be cultivated. Old and dying parts need extra care, weeds and bugs need to be monitored and if causing a problem, removed.

One of the best ways I know to create a good relationship is the same philosophy I use in my garden. I look at it over a period of time and see it as a project. Are there times when it looks drab and abandoned or is it always in as good of shape as it can be?

Of course there will be times when both our garden and our relationship will be ravaged by challenges. For the garden, those challenges usually involve extremes of temperature or storms. For our relationships, it?s the things that life throws at us, what I call life?s challenges. We have to work together to overcome them and we have to respond before too much damage is done.

Good relationship maintenance is essential to create a happy and fulfilling environment.

One great way to do this is to have regular weekly or biweekly ?check-ins,? regular chats about the state of your relationship. I find it?s best done over coffee or a cup of tea, when you will not be disturbed or distracted and can give your partner your full attention.

It should last only 10 to 20 minutes; if it?s a regular thing, there won?t be a need for long drawn-out chats. When things come up that need addressing but for which you lack the time at the moment, schedule them for your next check-in.

Check-ins are a good way to keep molehills from becoming mountains and it really is a good feeling to deal with things when they are still small and less troublesome.

I have been using the garden/relationship metaphor in my life for several years. The garden may change, but the work needed to maintain it doesn?t. My friends will always ask me, ?is everything in the garden rosy?? Of course they know that a garden full of roses would be boring. They have gardens too. Many have check-ins with their partners and most are in healthy, happy relationships.

Ch?vez funeral: How do you spot a true Ch?vista? (+video)

For millions of Hugo Ch?vez?s supporters, waiting in line for 12 hours or more is a small sacrifice for the opportunity to spend a few seconds in front of his coffin.

They spend all day in line in the searing heat for a chance to pay their respects. For Hugo Ch?vez?s supporters, waiting in line for 12 hours or more to spend a few seconds in front of his coffin has become something of a required pilgrimage.

?It?s something that all Chavistas should do. Something they need to do,? says Higdalia Az?car, who was not deterred by stories of daylong waits ?We came here for the love. We wouldn?t miss it.?

The line stretches for miles, weaving through shade and sunlight, past public parks and in front of the bleachers where Venezuelans watched Ch?vez salute military parades.

On Friday morning, state-run television said more than 2 millions Venezuelans had made the trip to the low-slung military academy where Ch?vez?s open casket has been since Wednesday.

Vice President Nicolas Maduro, who will be sworn in as interim president this evening, on Thursday extended the viewing for an additional seven days due to the response. Thereafter, Ch?vez?s body will be embalmed, much the way Russia?s Vladmir Lenin and China?s Mao Zedong were, and displayed in a glass case for eternity, Mr. Maduro says.

Once inside, visitors said they saw Ch?vez wearing his signature red beret and sash. Photography was not permitted, but visitors say that on Wednesday and Thursday, Ch?vez was dressed in a blue suit. That was swapped out this morning ? before his funeral ? for his military fatigues.

?I was filled with sadness when I approached his casket,? says Juana Uscategui, an elementary school teacher. She waited 15 hours in a wheelchair to catch a glimpse. ?When I finally saw, I was overcome with joy, as he was finally resting. He wore his red hat, his suit and medals. He was beautiful.?

For Lenin Benitez, a political organizer, it was a two-day journey.

After driving overnight from the state of Lara in the northwest, he queued up because it was ?necessary to see him again and to show to the world that Venezuela stood with their president.?

He adored the idea of embalming the president.

?In the rest of the world, people tell their children stories about fictitious heroes, like Batman and Robin,? Mr. Benitez says. ?Here in Venezuela, we can tell our story of Hugo Ch?vez and his deeds. But more than that, we can show him to our children and continue to inspire the revolution.?

Specs purportedly leak for HTC?s upcoming ?Facebook Phone,? the HTC Myst

MIAMI (Reuters) - Tiger Woods's sharp putting helped him to a share of the five-way lead at the WGC-Cadillac Championship on Thursday after he got lessons on the practice green from one of his opponents. Woods worked with Steve Stricker, one of the game's best putters, for over an hour on Wednesday and it clearly worked as he shot a six-under 66 at Doral, with just 23 putts in his round, including a 38-footer for birdie on the fourth hole. "Whatever he says, I'm going to do. He's one of the best putters that's ever lived," Woods said after his round. ...
