Katy Perry's Hair: Why So Blue?

Perry's hair colorist weighs in on the pop star's ever-changing locks.

Over the weekend, Katy Perry debuted another shade of blue hair in Las Vegas. The newer, bluer hair was more turquoise than the look she had sported weeks before on the set of an Adidas commercial.

Katy is constantly changing her hair color from black to blond to pink, and seemingly every shade in between. These days, however, it seems she's settled on blue. So, when MTV News spoke to her longtime hair colorist, Rita Hazan, she gave us the low-down on why Ms. Perry is feeling so blue these days.

"Of course, being Katy, she is a lot more edgy and she's cooler and she likes to take a lot of risks. And I love that she's like, 'I'm feeling a little blue, let's go blue' — not in her energy, just in her hair color," Hazan explained to MTV News about the pop star's current hair-color choice. "I felt like it's the perfect color for her because her eyes are blue and she has the perfect skin tone to be a really vibrant, really cool, intense blue."

When Hazan first heard about Perry's decision to deepen her locks to blue, she wanted her to be a "cobalt blue, muted cobalt blue; it's really cool. It took me three days to come up with this color. I'm so obsessed with it. It's like the wallpaper for my iPhone."

Since then, the color has lightened up a bit, but regardless of the shade, the hair still has everyone buzzing. "I was shocked by all the crazy reactions that people had to the blue 'cause I thought going from black to pink would have been the major reaction people would have," she said. "But I kind of like that people are loving the blue 'cause I'm obsessed with blue. So any shade of blue, I'm loving. I know it's not natural, but it sort of works in a natural way."

Of course, her hair color might have something to do with her recent split from Russell Brand. Kimberley Pierce, a colorist at Ion Studio in New York City, explained that she's seen many a newly single chick come in and change up their mood with some new hair color. "They'll come in for a consult and say, 'My boyfriend and I just broke up and I want brown hair' and they're a blonde," she said, adding that she usually has some advice for those rash decisions. "The best thing we can do for them is tell them to try a wig on first."

Whatever Katy's reason for the shocking, eye-catching color change, Pierce added that it really works for her.

"I kind of like that she got away from the pink because I feel like we've seen that so much. With the blue, it's more vibrant and definitely she's on her own with it," she said. "She's kind of all the way in with the blue. She's kind of this candy-coated sort of person. So I guess blue would be the natural transition, or purple. It's nice to see her experiment with different things."

Destiny's Child Crew on Beyonce's Baby Girl (omg!)

Destiny's Child Crew on Beyonce's Baby Girl

Destiny's Child members Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams dished on Beyonce's new transition into motherhood over the weekend, breaking their silence on the birth of baby Blue Ivy Carter.

Kelly remained uncharacteristically tight-lipped when asked if Blue's features favored one of her famous parents.

"That will be something that everybody will have to experience the same way I did," Kelly told USA Today. "That's for her parents to disclose, not myself."

Looks like somebody's learning from past mistakes!

Judging from Michelle's comment, I think it's a safe bet to say that Blue takes after her mother: "She is absolutely gorgeous," said the singer. No offense to the father.

In an interview with People, Michelle revealed that at one point Beyonce was thought to be the least likely Destiny's Child member to become a mom.

"We were very shocked. We were laughing with each other the other day and she was like, 'Can y'all believe it? I was the anti - like no children for me,' and she's the first one [of us to have a baby]," Michelle said. "So it was so amazing to see her."

The nation's weather (AP)

Weather Underground Forecast for Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012.

Wintry weather persisted over the Great Lakes and Northeast on Saturday as a strong winter storm slowly pulled northeastward and away from the region. Flow around this system was expected to continue pulling moisture onshore from the Atlantic Ocean, while cold air continued pouring into the Great Lakes. Snow showers were expected to do diminish across the Northeast early in the day, though lake effect snow showers were expected to persist along the downwind shores of the Great Lakes. Parts of western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania, and northern Ohio could see another 3 to 6 inches of new snow. Elsewhere, expect only 1 to 2 inches of light snow to develop across the higher elevations of the Northern Appalachians.

Behind the system, high pressure was expected to quickly build in from the Central Plains and Mississippi River Valley. This rapid change from low to high pressure was expected to cause some windy conditions across the Great Lakes, Midwest, and Ohio River Valley. Wind gusts were expected from 20 to 30 mph, which would be even stronger at higher elevations of the Northern and Central Appalachians.

In the north, a weak trough of low pressure moving through Canada was expected to continue pushing a front through the northern U.S. This system had little moisture associated with it, but it was expected to bring a few scattered snow showers to the Northern Plains and Upper Midwest.

Out west, a strong and cold winter storm will drop in from the Gulf of Alaska. This system was expected to move over British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, triggering heavy rain and snow showers. Most areas of the Cascades were expected to see 3 to 8 inches of new snow on Saturday. Cold temperatures were expected to accompany this system, with highs ranging 10 to 15 degrees below seasonable. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Friday ranged from a morning low of -14 degrees at Hallock, Minn. to a high of 80 degrees at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Android App Review: Nordstrom

Nordstrom 1

The official Nordstrom app lets you browse the store's collections and purchase clothes right from your Android device. When the app opens, you'll see the main menu which can be filtered by Department or Brand. If you select the Department filter, you'll get a list of different shopping departments: Women, Men, Juniors, Designer Collections, Baby & Kids, Shoes, Handbags & Accessories, Jewelry & Watches, Beauty & Fragrance, At Home & Gifts, Sale and Weddings. Brands will bring up every different brand that is carried by Nordstrom, or too long to spew out here.

There is always a menu that you can access via the action bar or menu button. Options are Your Style, Shop, Wish List, Events and Bag. Your Style allows you to browse various styles handpicked by Nordtrom.  Shop brings you right back to the area of the app where you can shop, Wish List saves everything that you would like to place onto your wish list, Events displays upcoming things to do at your local store and Bag is simply your cart.

You can purchase items directly from the app and either have it shipped to you or schedule an in-store pick-up.

Overall, the official Nordstrom app is very nicely done. Fans of the department store will find it to be a good experience and I'm sure will find that they're shopping more because they can do it anywhere. If you like Nordstrom or just want to check out a good shopping app, please find links to the free app after the break.

Mandated community service: Risks and potential

This was written by Alfie Kohn, the author of 12 books about education and human behavior, including ?The Schools Our Children Deserve,? ?The Homework Myth,? and the newly published?Feel-Bad Education . . . And Other Contrarian Essays on Children & Schooling.? He lives (actually) in the Boston area and (virtually) at www.alfiekohn.com. .

By Alfie Kohn

Q) We are facing a proposal to require community service for all high school students. I am very concerned about the mixed message this will send to our students about freely giving of themselves in service to others. What are your thoughts on community service as a requirement for graduation?

A) I roll my eyes a bit when those up above reach for coercion to improve those down below: We?ll just mandate community service (or character education, or tougher graduation requirements, or whatever) and watch students improve. But while a service requirement hardly guarantees any benefits ? which are contingent, among other things, on the extent to which your staff and the students themselves take the activities seriously ? neither does it preclude such benefits. Much depends on how (and by whom) the activities are designed.

First of all, I have some concerns about bland activities undertaken by individual students. If, however, you were to redefine ?community service? as an opportunity for collective action, genuine democratic involvement, and work for social justice -- that would be as exciting as it is rare. (See Joseph Kahne & Joel Westheimer?s article ?Teaching Democracy: What Schools Need to Do? in the September 2003 issue of Phi Delta Kappan, as well as other writings by both of these authors.)

Second, for anything of value to come out of this, students need to be involved at all points ? in thinking about the rationale for doing some sort of service and in working together to plan every detail of the activities: deciding democratically how many options will be available to each student and discussing the rationale for each option, making contact with people in the community to set things up, making arrangements to evaluate the activities themselves as well as the students? experiences afterwards, and so on.

The process probably ought to be framed as ?How can we make our town/ our state / our country /the world a better place? What needs doing? Who requires our care and our help?? ? rather than ?How can we fulfill this requirement?? Sandwiching the activity itself between planning (before) and reflection (after) ? and having the students play a key role in every stage (rather than just giving a menu of options to each student individually) ? could turn out to be as valuable, both intellectually and socially, as the activities themselves.

Finally, what one doesn?t do can be as important as what one does. I hope it goes without saying that any benefit potentially derived from this activity would likely be wiped out by (1) rewarding students for their participation or (2) setting up some sort of competition between students (individuals or groups).

Some mandates are inherently useless, if not counterproductive, and should be actively resisted. (See under: No Child Left Behind) But my hunch is that this lemon can be made into lemonade. For school administrators to treat students the same way the administrators are treated by policymakers would instead be to turn salmon into salmonella.

(AP) ? An Iranian court has convicted an American man of working for the CIA and sentenced him to death, state radio reported Monday, in a case adding to the accelerating tension between the United States and Iran.

Iran charges that as a former U.S. Marine, Amir Mirzaei Hekmati, received special training and served at U.S. military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan before heading to Iran for his alleged intelligence mission. The radio report did not say when the verdict was issued.

The 28-year-old former military translator was born in Arizona and graduated from high school in Michigan. His family is of Iranian origin. His father, a professor at a community college in Flint, Michigan, has said his son is not a CIA spy and was visiting his grandmothers in Iran when he was arrested.

Behnaz Hekmati, his mother, said in an email to The Associated Press that she and her husband, Ali, are "shocked and terrified" that their son has been sentenced to death. She said the verdict is "the result of a process that was neither transparent nor fair."

Under Iranian law, he has 20 days to appeal. Hekmati has a court-appointed lawyer who was identified only by his surname, Samadi, and there was no word about an appeal.

Gholam Hossein Mohseni Ejehei, spokesman for Iran's judiciary said if the verdict is appealed, it would go to Iran's Supreme Court, the official IRNA news agency reported.

Hekmati's trial took place as the U.S. announced new, tougher sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, which Washington believes Tehran is using to develop a possible atomic weapons capability.

Iran, which says it only seeks nuclear reactors for energy and research, has sharply increased its threats and military posturing against stronger pressures, including the U.S. sanctions targeting Iran's Central Bank in attempts to complicate its ability to sell oil.

The U.S. State Department has demanded Hekmati's release.

The court convicted him of working with a hostile country, belonging to the CIA and trying to accuse Iran of involvement in terrorism, Monday's report said.

In its ruling, a branch of Tehran Revolutionary Court described Hekmati as a mohareb, an Islamic term that means a fighter against God, and a mofsed, or one who spreads corruption on earth. Both terms appear frequently in Iranian court rulings.

In a closed court hearing in late December, the prosecution asked for the death penalty for Hekmati.

The U.S. government has called on Iranian authorities to grant Swiss diplomats access to him in prison. The Swiss government represents U.S. interests in Iran because the two countries don't have diplomatic relations.

Hekmati is a dual U.S.-Iranian national. Iran considers him an Iranian since the country's law does not recognize dual citizenship.

Similar cases against Americans accused of spying have heightened tensions throughout the years-long standoff over Iran's nuclear program.

Iran arrested three Americans in July 2009 along the border with Iraq and accused them of espionage, though the Americans said they were just hiking in the scenic and relatively peaceful Kurdish region of northern Iraq.

One of them was released after a year in prison, and the other two were freed in September in deals involving bail payments that were brokered by the Gulf sultanate of Oman, which has good relations with Iran and the U.S.

On Dec. 18, Iran's state TV broadcast video of Hekmati delivering a purported confession in which he said he was part of a plot to infiltrate Iran's Intelligence Ministry.

In a statement released the same day, the Intelligence Ministry said its agents identified Hekmati before his arrival in Iran, at Bagram Air Field in neighboring Afghanistan. Bagram is the main base for American and other international forces outside Kabul, the Afghan capital.

It is not clear exactly when he was arrested. News reports have said he was detained in late August or early September.

Hekmati's father said in a December interview with The Associated Press, that his son was a former Arabic translator in the U.S. Marines who entered Iran about four months earlier to visit his grandmothers.

At the time, he was working in Qatar as a contractor for a company "that served the Marines," his father said, without providing more specific details.

Social Media Tracks Disease Spread

60-Second Science60-Second Science | More Science

Analysis of social media and internet news reports can enable researchers to track a disease outbreak faster than conventional medical notifications. Cynthia Graber reports.

More 60-Second Science

After Haiti?s earthquake two years ago, cholera swept the country. And within a month, the same strain had spread to the Dominican Republic and the U.S., and then to Venezuela, Mexico, Spain, and Canada.

Fast and accurate tools are needed to help avoid such national and international epidemics. But it often takes weeks for traditional disease surveillance methods to reveal an illness?s spread. So researchers turned to the internet as a possible tracking tool. They culled information in eight languages from sources such as news articles and blogs during the first hundred days after the earthquake. They also searched Twitter.

With data from more than 4,500 reports and nearly 189,000 tweets, they mapped the outbreak and determined its progress, via an application called HealthMap. The information matched official results in certain places and generally followed the same trends. But unlike the officially issued information, this data could be collected immediately?and could have been available up to two weeks faster. The comparison was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. [Rumi Chunara, Jason R. Andrews and John S. Brownstein, Social and news media enable estimation of epidemiological patterns early in the 2010 Haitian cholera outbreak]

The scientists say these methods could provide a faster response to an epidemic?and potentially help limit suffering such as Haiti?s in the future.

?Cynthia Graber
